How to save the battery on the Iphone

If only you could carry a car battery with you? I hear you say…….

Well sadly you can’t. You can however, conserve the battery as much as possible by following these simple tips.  Simply follow them in the order below, although this is not set in stone:

  1. Make sure your iphone is updated regularly. If Apple have found a way of saving precious time on your battery, it will be in the update for sure.
  2. Switch off 3G.  Depending on the network you are on, your phone will spend most of it’s time not using the 3G Networks. It can double the battery strength by not using this feature. Follow this:  Goto the main Menu, then settings, then General, then Network, then click 3g to switch it off.
  3. If you use Wifi for internet browsing, this will also increase battery life instead of just using 3g.
  4. If you don’t use your iphone for browsing and connecting to the internet (stuff like mail, facebook etc…) then switch the Wifi off as well.  Follow this: Goto Menu, Settings, Wifi and switch it off.
  5. Switch off Bluetooth.  The Bluetooth radio on the phone constantly looks for other devices to talk to.  Unless you use bluetooth regularly, like for a car kit or headset, Keep it off.  Follow this:  Goto Menu, Settings, General, Bluetooth and switch it off.
  6. Click it to standby by Clicking Standby button as soon as you have finished using it (the little silver button at the top) . Or, set it to Auto lock after no activity on the device.  Follow this: Goto Menu, Settings,General, Autolock and preferably set it as short as possible.
  7. If you have email set up, if it is not important for you to receive emails the moment they are received, you can change the interval to hourly or even better, manually. By setting it manually, you just check it when you click the mail button. Follow this: Goto Menu, Settings, Mail, Fetch New Data, and the set your interval.
  8. While we are on the subject of email, also disable push email. That is found under the same menu and will also churn your battery.
  9. Turn off your location services. You only really need this to be active when you are using the Maps, another Sat Nav, or a locator app that requires your position. Follow this: Goto Menu, Settings, Location Services and switch it off.  It will prompt you to switch it on when you are required to use it.
  10. Turn off notifications. This controls what apps notify you of any changes while the device is not being used. If it’s not important for you, for example, to be on top of what your friends are doing on facebook, then disable this. You can even select which apps you would like to receive notifications on. Follow this Goto Menu, Settings, Notifications, and then switch it off or select the apps you don’t want warnings on.
  11. Got kids?? Keep them off it as well!  They will play games, surf endlessly on it while it is left unattended (it happens in our house all the time!!!!)  Set a pass code or even better, remove the games off it. To lock it follow this: Menu, Settings, General, Passcode lock, and set up a code.
  12. Turn the screen brightness down. Follow this: Menu,Settings Brightness and set it to a level you are happy with.
  13. Turn off your selective sounds and vibration. Follow this: Goto Menu, Settings, Sounds and set it for the ones you can do without.

And if all else fails………..

…….. when you battery is close to empty (15% or less) switch it to Airplane Mode.  This will switch everything off on the device.  You will not receive calls, texts etc… but at least you will be able to make calls some time later by switching to Airplane mode. Handy if you go on a night out and you need it to call the taxi.  Follow this:  Goto Menu, Settings, Airplane Mode

  1. Thanks Jason – I hadn’t considered all those annoying notifications for the apps on my phone. Great article :-) I keep a powermonkey in the car, but I think I will be getting in touch for a better phonekit before long!
